Bicycle Friendly Network Program |
Are you missing out on a significant source of tourist business?
Cycle tourists are increasing in number, as more travelers seek eco-friendly ways to see the world. Velo Cape Breton's Bicycle Friendly Program is for any business wishing to attract this growing group. Billions of dollars have been invested in North America developing bicycling infrastructure, and the result is that more people are bicycling. Over 4 billion dollars has been invested in the USA, with a significant increase in the number of cyclists there. In Quebec alone there are now 5.3 million bicycles - 760 adult bicycles per 1000 people.

And these people are traveling. Statistics say cyclists have above-average incomes, stay longer at their destination, and spend more per day than motor-tourists. Accredited Bicycle-Friendly businesses assure cyclists who are planning a trip that they will have places to eat, visit, or stay overnight that will serve their specific needs. These needs may include covered and locked spaces for bicycle storage at hotels/motels/B&Bs, laundry facilities, guaranteed sites and cooking shelters at campgrounds, high-carb meals with larger-than-average portions of fruits and vegetables at restaurants, information on bike routes, repair shops, and on other nearby Bicycle-Friendly Businesses here in Cape Breton.
Advantages of the Cape Breton Bicycle Friendly Network:
1. Increase your exposure to the growing bicycle community;
2. Give your business "bike appeal" drawing cyclists to your door.
3. Increase word-or-mouth recommendations from locals and the bicycling community.
4. FREE subscription to the Velo Cape Breton eNewsletter to keep informed about local and regional bicycling activities and opportunities.
Joining is simple:
- Select the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for your type of establishment, Hotel/Motel/B&B Accommodations, Campgrounds, or Services (restaurants, craft shops, museums, etc).
- Make a copy of the MOU. Make arrangements to meet the Conditions of Accreditation as listed on page 1 & 2. Most, if not all of the basic items listed are probably readily available at your establishment; other items, such as the bike rack and tools can be had at a minimal cost. Velo Cape Breton will provide you with the List of References, and Bike Routes in your immediate area.
- Mail the completed documents to Velo Cape Breton for processing.
